Your Guide to Pattaya: Beaches, Buddha Views, and Nightlife by the Gulf

  • March 10, 2025

Nestled on Thailand’s southeastern coast, Pattaya is a vibrant beach town that’s got a little something for everyone—sun-soaked beaches, buzzing nightlife, and a splash of culture. What was once a sleepy fishing village now draws travelers from all over the world with its warm Gulf of Thailand waters, golden sunsets, and endless street food adventures.

Discovering Pattaya’s Sights

Pattaya only officially became a city in 1978, but it’s come a long way since its humble beginnings. American soldiers stationed nearby in the '60s were among the first to put this coastal spot on the tourist map, and it’s been growing ever since. Though you won’t find centuries-old temples here, Pattaya still knows how to impress.

Pratumnak Hill: Buddha and the Best Views

Smack in the middle of town, Pratumnak Hill is home to some of Pattaya’s most iconic sights. Climb to the top and you’ll be greeted by the massive 15-meter-tall Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai, plus a panoramic viewpoint offering sweeping views of the city and sea.

You can drive up, but if you’re up for it, I’d suggest walking—the path winds through a peaceful green park and gives you a little quiet before the grand reveal. Time your visit around sunset for the full wow effect.

The main Buddha statue is surrounded by a circle of smaller figures, each representing a day of the week. Many visitors leave flowers, incense, or coins as offerings—feel free to join in and make a wish.

Dress respectfully—shoulders, knees, and midriffs should be covered. Free sarongs are available near the stairs, and entry is completely free.

Walking Street: After Dark Adventures

By day, Walking Street could pass for any other road. But come nightfall, it turns into the neon-lit heart of Pattaya’s nightlife. The street is closed off to cars, bars crank up their music, dancers fill the doorways, and the whole place pulses with energy.

Back in the mid-20th century, this is where the first clubs and entertainment spots opened for U.S. soldiers—and the party hasn’t stopped since. It’s not exactly family-friendly, but for adults looking for wild nightlife, this is the place to be. Just keep an eye on your belongings—like in many busy tourist areas, pickpockets can be an issue.

Where to Hit the Beach

Jomtien Beach: Chill Vibes & Sun Loungers

While central Pattaya's waters can be murky, head just a bit south to Jomtien for a better beach experience. It’s one long stretch of golden sand with swaying palm trees and affordable loungers (about 50 baht for the day). Street vendors wander by with snacks and drinks, so you don’t even need to leave your spot.

It’s a great place for a long walk, lazy sunbathing, or simply watching the waves roll in.

Coral Island (Koh Larn): White Sand, Clear Waters

Looking for postcard-perfect beaches? Take a short 30-minute ferry ride from Bali Hai Pier to Koh Larn. The island is a local favorite for its turquoise waters and powdery white sand.

Tawaen Beach is the most popular, with plenty of restaurants, water sports, and even beachfront shops. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, head to Tien Beach—smaller, calmer, and with clear water ideal for snorkeling.

Ferries run every 30 minutes, and tickets cost just 30 baht each way. The last ferry back to Pattaya leaves at 6:00 PM, so don’t lose track of time!

Family Fun: Ramayana Water Park

Just 15 km south of Pattaya lies Thailand’s largest water park—Ramayana. With 21 water slides, lazy rivers, wave pools, and themed zones inspired by Asian mythology, it’s a hit with kids and adults alike.

Beyond the water fun, you can rent a paddle boat, stroll through a floating market, or even feed elephants. It’s open daily (except Wednesdays) from 11 AM to 6 PM. Tickets are 749 baht for adults and taller kids, and 649 baht for little ones under 122 cm.

Pattaya is often seen as just a party town, but there’s so much more beneath the surface. Between peaceful hilltop temples, relaxing beaches, day trips to paradise islands, and even elephant encounters, you can shape your own kind of getaway here. Whether you’re in it for the food, the views, the nightlife, or the adventure - Pattaya’s got you covered.
